Heart Transplants - Procedure, Risks, Recovery, and More
A person with a diseased heart is chosen for a heart transplant which will be replaced with a healthy donor’s heart. Heart Transplant came into existence in the year 1967 and since then it has become an established treatment for all those who have advanced heart disease. Many leading hospitals perform Heart Transplant in India. Let’s see here about the heart transplant procedure and risk involved.
Procedure:
Once you are diagnosed for heart failure, you will undergo a careful screening by a team of doctors, nurses, social workers, and bioethicists. They will review your medical history, diagnostic test results, social history, and psychological test results to analyze whether you will survive the procedure. Then you have to wait for the donor and the health care team will monitor you closely to keep your heart failure in control.
Once the heart is available, it will be provided to the best possible match based on blood type, body size, UNOS status and the length of the time the patient is waiting. However, race and gender do not have any bearing. Then the heart is harvested from the donor and is cooled and stored in a special solution while being taken to the recipient.
They will also ensure that the donor's heart is in good condition. During the transplantation, the patient will be put on a heart-lung machine through which he will receive vital oxygen and nutrients from the blood through the operation is in process. Then the surgeons remove the patient’s heart except for the back walls of the atria – the upper chamber of the heart and then the heart is sewn into place and the blood vessels are connected. Once the blood starts flowing, the heart warms up and starts beating.
Risks:
The most common causes of death post heart transplantation are infection and rejection. Patients who are put on drugs for the prevention of new heart might develop kidney damage, high blood pressure, osteoporosis, and lymphoma. Coronary artery disease develops in almost half of the patients while receiving transplants. Many of them will not have symptoms as they have no sensation in the new heart.
Recovery:
The patient who has undergone a heart transplant in Heart Hospital in Delhi needs to follow the medications, exercise and special diet advised to them. However, their survival depends on many factors such as age, general health and response to the transplant.
Thus, when you get in touch with the reputable hospital, they will advise you on the course of treatment to be followed during the heart transplant and how to lead a healthy life post-transplant. \
